SPRING AROMAS
Spring has truly sprung and with it comes the intoxicating fragrance of blooming flowers. Everywhere you turn, lilacs, wisteria, bluebells, and gorse announce the season with their heady aromas and beautiful colours.
For me, this time of year, is an aromatic delight, and I am fortunate enough to live somewhere where there is an abundance of these plants.
Though none produce essential oils you can enjoy their scent by stepping outside. There’s something quite sublime about pausing during a walk, leaning in, and breathing deeply. That fleeting moment of immersion in scent has a way of brightening the spirit, reminding us of the sheer power of our sense of smell.
Lilacs and wisteria, exude a distinctive fragrance—sweet, floral, and powdery, with a lush heady richness.
Native bluebells weave a different kind of enchantment. Their scent is sweet and unmistakably fresh, green with a honeyed undertone with a hint of citrus and hyacinth-like florals. Native bluebells differ from their Spanish counterparts by their distinctive one-sided blooms and, of course, their delightful fragrance. Walking through a bluebell woodland is always an aromatic and visual delight.
The vivid golden gorse on the hillside of the South Downs are also aromatic, slightly exotic and tropical. When gorse is in full bloom and warmed by the sun the aroma intensifies.
Spring is always a revitalising season – It’s like nature hits the reset button, and suddenly everything feels fresh and full of possibility. Longer daylight hours mean more exposure to sunlight, which boosts serotonin and helps improve mood and energy levels. Warmer temperatures make it easier to be active and spend time outdoors, which can combat sluggishness and fatigue. The burst of colour, blossoms, greenery, bright blue skies, has a psychological effect, often making people feel more hopeful and motivated.
So do get out when you can and hunt out the aromatic delights that are there ready for you and your nose!
