Your Arms Are The Safest Place I Know – Finding Cooper’s Voice

It’s so loud that the pain is ringing in my ears,
But I cannot tell you why I am stuck behind these tears,
The light is so bright it’s overwhelming every part of me,
The last time we came here they had two benches not three.

The smells are different and I don’t know why,
I need a minute to lie down now and look at the sky,
My zipper feels funny and my socks are on wrong,
I’m trying my best to remember that one Moana song.

The shoes scuffing on the pavement make my teeth hurt,
The puddle I jumped in has left my legs covered in dirt,
The dogs walking towards me are making me want to hide,
I kick and scream so that they walk the other side.

I just need to run I don’t understand the fear,
I can’t go that way I didn’t like it last year,
The sounds I am making tell you I am about to go into a meltdown,
The grass under me is wet and I don’t like that it’s brown.

I don’t have a voice so none of that is heard,
But you’re my mummy so you know what I need without a single word,
You hold me close to you until all the fear finally lets me go,
I can breathe again, your arms are the safest place I know.
