      The difference between ignore vs. observe is that ignore means to deliberately disregard or avoid something, whereas observe involves noticing and paying attention without immediate judgment or reaction. Ignoring leads to missing out on potential insights, while observing fosters awareness, allowing for better understanding and informed decision-making.

      The Difference Between Ignore vs. Observe

      Ignore

      /ignor/ verb
      Refuse to take notice of or acknowledge; disregard intentionally.

      The human brain takes in 110 billion points of information and we process 40 at any given time.* We are wired to select the one we pay attention to.

      This is a survival behavior and a behavior that can be detrimental to us. There is a balance of understanding when and how to ignore and when and how we should acknowledge.

      The act of intentionally or unintentionally ignoring can have positive or negative influences on ourselves, others, and what we are doing. Exploring this avoidance can unlock the client self awareness.

      Coaching Questions:

      • What/who are you ignoring in your current situation?
      • What do you gain/lose from ignoring this/them?
      • If you continue to ignore this/them, what is the most likely outcome?
      • How does this impact your goals?

      Observe

      /ǝb’zǝrv/ verb
      Notice or perceive
      (something) and register it as being significant.

      With life being so busy, it can be challenging to be present, observe, and think about the importance of something/someone.

      There is power in noticing and understanding the significance of things/people. The process of reflection can accelerate the observation and allow for critical thinking about significance.

      This awareness can shift and create an opportunity for further exploration and growth. The regular practice and strength of being observant can also assist in the intentional pursuit of goals.

      Coaching Questions:

      • What if this/them is true in your observation?
      • What changes for you when you acknowledge this/them?
      • If things/they change, what positive change may happen?
      • What support may you need to face this/them?
      • What does this tell you about yourself?
