In a world that glorifies hustle, staying busy has become a badge of honour. But underneath the endless to-do lists, constant notifications, and multitasking, many of us are quietly craving one thing: calm.
Calm isn’t just the absence of chaos—it’s an intentional state of being. It’s what allows us to think clearly, act mindfully, and show up fully in our lives. And the good news? You don’t need to escape to a mountaintop or book a week-long retreat to find it. You can begin creating calm right where you are, with small choices and daily rituals.
How you begin and end your day matters. Here are some ideas you could try to replace phone scrolling first thing. Instead, do something which will bring calm to your morning and evening.
Protect your morning ritual:
On waking, do some breathing exercises such as slow somatic ones or bigger belly breaths with retention. This is a soothing way to wake-up and to feel energised before you put a foot out of bed!
Stretch and move your body. Find a corner or a nook nearby and roll out that yoga mat. You won’t regret even ten minutes of movement in the morning.
Journal your first thoughts on paper. Morning pages, popularised by Julia Cameron in The Artist’s Way, involves writing three pages every morning in a stream of consciousness to reduce anxiety, clear mental clutter and boost creativity.
Protect your evening ritual:
Meditate in a quiet space or treat yourself to a sound bath via Spotify.
Sip a cup of cacao and introduce an intention to close your day.
Journal thoughts, positive or negative, ending on a note of gratitude/lessons learned or miracles given.
