We often hear of the physical benefits of healthy living but, did you know that there are also spiritual benefits as well? The age-old adage “you are what you eat” takes on a deeper meaning when we consider the impact of diet on spiritual well-being. The food we consume doesn’t just nourish our bodies; it also feeds our souls and influences our spiritual health.
Research on Diet and Mental Health
Numerous studies have shown a link between diet and mental health. For example, a study published in the “Frontiers Research” found that a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains was associated with lower levels of depression. Following are several ways that diet impacts our spiritual health.
Keeps you in the present moment
Most people divert their attention to what has happened in the past and what may happen in the future. However, vigorous exercising keeps your mind focused on The Now. According to several metaphysical teachers including Ehkart Tolle, being immersed in the present moment is a very powerful experience.
Increases intuition
There’s a reason why they call it a ‘gut feeling.’ When you have healthy gut bacteria and when your body functions at its optimal level, you can expect to see an increase in your intuition. Many people I know who are in top condition say their instincts are sharp.
Honors your body
Your body is sacred. When you take care of your body by giving it nutritious, natural foods and when you give it exercise – you are honoring it with love. If the mind and body are strong, so will be the spirit.
Gets you comfortable with being uncomfortable
Too much comfort can cause someone to easily fall into complacency. With complacency there is no growth. Exercising especially when you don’t want to do it and eating healthy when you’re dying for a chocolate bar will make you stronger.
You help others
Most religious and spiritual practices in the world heavily emphasize treating others well. When you are physically strong and vibrant, you set a powerful example for others. You can inspire others to take control of their health by taking control of yours. The best thing is that you are helping others without infringing upon their free will by doing this.
Consuming poor quality food can tarnish the body and the soul causing symptoms like brain fog, depression, weight gain, gut dysbiosis, hormonal imbalance, etc. This results in disease and distracts us from what is important in our life.
