From Burnout to Balance: Why Wellness Professionals Need Aromatherapy Now

As healers and wellness practitioners, you are in a constant state of giving and helping. But at some point, your tank will run empty UNLESS you practice consistent self-replenishment.

What does that look like?

  • Diffusing essential oils in the morning for at least 5 minutes
  • Taking a walk in the afternoon to breathe in fresh air and connect with nature.
  • Applying a brain booster roll-on in the afternoon to push through the afternoon fatigue.
  • Relax in the evening with an aromatic bath.
  • Smelling your “good night” nasal inhaler before bed.

Little splashes of self-care throughout the day can keep your tank filled, or at least keep it from running dry.

If you’re a therapist, teacher, nurse, practitioner, or coach… you’ve probably felt burnout at some point. That emotional fatigue can build up after holding space for others, day after day.

You’re great at giving. But what’s refueling you?

The Effects of Burnout on Your Body

Burnout causes changes not only physiologically, but also biochemically (hormones, neurotransmitters, and your metabolism).

Your HPA axis (stress regulating system) goes haywire and becomes sluggish, slowing everything down from your response time and productivity to mobility and flexibility.

The Effects of Burnout on Your Mind

Chronic burnout is detrimental to your mindset and brain. It impacts how you think, make decisions (or not), and the quality of your mood and motivation level.

When you are not leading from a happy and positive place, you may have more anxiety, panic, and a scarcity mindset.

The Effects of Burnout on Your Emotions & Intuition

This goes without saying, but your emotions will be so consuming and overwhelming. You will be sadder, down, and depressed. You may feel defeated and stressed by not reaching your potential.

Keeping your emotions suppressed, hidden, trapped, and buried is NOT the answer. Emotions were meant to be felt, explored, honored, and then released so you recalibrate to your best self…wiser and happier.

How Aromatherapy Overcomes Burnout

When you smell the scent from essential oils (unadulterated from nature-made plants), it activates your limbic system.

Your olfactory bulb helps you identify a scent to see if you like it or not…at this moment.

Your amygdala helps you connect with your true feelings, honestly and fully.

Your hippocampus taps into scent-triggered memories and emotions you need to explore on your healing journey.

Your hypothalamus allows you to locate the place in your body hiding those trapped emotions, so you can release them, with unconditional love and kindness, and without judgment.

Also, smelling essential oils on a regular basis can balance and regulate your nervous system. Essential oils like pink grapefruit and Roman chamomile regulate cortisol, helping you manage stress (and weight). When you combine nervine essential oils, they support the parasympathetic response to restore balance. Which means…your gut & brain communicate a whole lot better!

This is the power that aromatherapy can offer you in your personal care practices, as well as in your wellness business. Integrating aromatherapy into your business and professional services helps both you and your client at the same time.

It is a way to keep your tank full, avoiding burnout, every single day.

Whether you are helping your family at home or coaching clients on their wellness journey, adding in aromatherapy services is a natural fit. Talking through mindset and health strategies is great. However, when you back them up and reinforce them with essential oils, it makes their healing more impactful at a deeper level.  Emotional healing needs a body-mind-based tool, and scent goes where words can’t.

Diffusing oils in the workplace can help lower stress while improving productivity and happiness.

TIP: Diffuse subtle scents and not strong, overwhelming scents.
