Uttarakhand Approves India’s First “Yoga Policy 2025” — A Vision to Become the Global Capital of Yoga and Wellness

In a landmark move aimed at strengthening India’s ancient yogic legacy and promoting holistic health, the Government of Uttarakhand has officially approved the “Uttarakhand Yoga Policy 2025” during a cabinet meeting chaired by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami. The announcement was made by Shri Deependra Chaudhary, IAS, Secretary of AYUSH and AYUSH Education. This is the first Yoga Policy of its kind in India and marks a significant step toward establishing Uttarakhand as the Global Capital of Yoga and Wellness.

Positioned at the heart of India’s spiritual and yogic heritage, Uttarakhand now aims to elevate its global stature through structured policies and targeted investment in yoga-based health, tourism, education, and employment.


Key Objectives of the Uttarakhand Yoga Policy 2025:

  • Establishment of five Yoga Health Hubs across the state by 2030.
  • Functional Yoga Wellness Centers in every district by March 2026.
  • Mandatory registration of all yoga institutions through a dedicated online portal.
  • Organization of national and international yoga conferences with participation from 15–20 countries by 2028.
  • Certification of 500+ yoga trainers every year under a structured training and accreditation framework.

Support & Incentives Under the Policy:

  • Up to 50% financial assistance (capped at ₹20 lakhs) for establishing new yoga and meditation centers.
  • Research grants of up to ₹10 lakhs to promote innovation and scholarly work in yoga sciences.
  • Support for existing institutions to enhance capacity and introduce new yoga-based curricula.
  • Establishment of a Yoga Instructor Certification System to ensure standardized training and recognition.

Budgetary Allocations & Institutional Framework:

  • A total allocation of ₹35 crores over the next 5 years, including:
    • ₹25 crores for Yoga Health Hubs
    • ₹1 crore for yoga research
    • ₹1.81 crores for teacher certification and training
    • ₹7.5 crores to support yoga programs in existing institutions
  • Creation of a Directorate of Yoga, which will be responsible for policy execution, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Formation of a High-Level State Committee to oversee and ensure effective policy implementation.

Projected Impact on the State:

  • 13,000+ employment opportunities to be created in yoga and wellness sectors.
  • 2,500+ certified yoga instructors across the state.
  • Yoga-based activities to be expanded across 10,000+ institutions.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary AYUSH, Shri Deependra Chaudhary, IAS, stated:

“This policy is not just about tourism or economic growth — it is a cultural mission. Through this initiative, we aim to present Uttarakhand’s identity and ancient wellness traditions to the world, with yoga as the guiding force.”
